Sharing Our Spark Grant Project Topics

Food insecurity is a major socioeconomic problem impacting low-income families globally. This problem is rooted in systemic inequities and disparities in access to basic necessities. Low-income families sometimes face major challenges to acquiring enough, nutritious food, such as limited financial resources, lack of transportation to grocery shops, insufficient knowledge of nutrition and cooking, and a scarcity of affordable healthy food options. This creates a difficult option between paying for other necessities such as rent, utilities, or medical costs and purchasing healthy meals.
The Spark Grant Project seeks to shed light on the multidimensional nature of poverty and its effects on people's well-being. Understanding the root causes of food insecurity, investigating the intersectionality of food insecurity with other social issues, evaluating the effectiveness of existing food assistance programs and community initiatives, and identifying opportunities for collaboration between local government, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and community members to develop long-term solutions are all important areas of research.
By involving stakeholders and elevating the perspectives of those affected by food insecurity, the project hopes to promote a more inclusive and compassionate community in which all people have fair access to nutritious food and the resources they require to flourish.

Pierce County, Washington, is working with various government agencies and nonprofit organizations to tackle food insecurity. These include Pierce County Human Services, Emergency Food Network, Nourish Pierce County, Tacoma Public Schools, and Northwest Harvest. These organizations manage food assistance programs, distribute food through food banks, meal sites, and shelters, and provide nutrition education. They also operate food distribution centers and advocate for statewide policies to address food insecurity. These efforts aim to provide essential support to low-income families in the region.

The study explores the challenges faced by low-income families in accessing consistent, nutritious food and suggests improvements or additional resources to improve their food security and overall well-being.
